Premises Liability
Florida law says property owners must warn visitors or tenants of hazards on their property, or make their property safe for the visitors they invite. That applies to all types of property -- stores and other commercial properties open to the public, private homes with invited guests and even rental properties. But all too often, they don't -- and someone is seriously hurt as a result. When that's the case, the injured person has a legal right to sue the property's owner or manager over the injuries.
Accidents on another person's property aren't limited to just slips and falls, although these are common. Attacks by vicious dogs, toxic exposure and drowning accidents in swimming pools are all examples of hazards that could cause an accident on someone else's property. Premises liability law also includes negligent security, in which property owners can be held liable for violent crimes if they failed to take reasonable security measures. If you've been hurt in any of these ways, you have the right to hold the property's owner or maintainer responsible for your injuries and your costs.
