Asbestos & Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer affecting the lining of the lungs and sometimes other vital organs. It is considered an especially aggressive form of cancer because it spreads very quickly, responds poorly to surgery and leaves its victim with a median survival rate measured in months, not years. And unfortunately, mesothelioma takes decades to incubate, showing up 20 to 60 years after the victim was originally exposed. Studies suggest that 2,000 to 3,000 mesothelioma cases are diagnosed each year, and predict more in the future.
Unlike conventional lung cancer, mesothelioma is not caused or related to smoking. Scientists believe almost all mesothelioma cases are caused by exposure to asbestos, a substance once used widely in industrial and construction work. Brake linings, textiles and shipyards are all well-known causes of occupational exposure to asbestos, and many thousands of Americans may also be exposed through insulation in their homes. Asbestos has been definitively linked to disease since the 1920s, but despite these well-known dangers, American industry continued its widespread use until the late 1970s. In fact, asbestos has never been fully banned in the United States, though it is banned in 60 other nations. Medical experts suggest that as many as 1.3 million American workers may be exposed to asbestos each year.
Mesothelioma patients and their families face intensive and crippling medical treatments -- and the six-figure bills to go with them. No one should have to go through this, especially for the sake of someone else's profits. If you believe your mesothelioma could have been caused by exposure to asbestos, even decades ago, you have the right to hold the workplace or people who exposed it to you responsible for your injuries, including pain and suffering, disability or a wrongful death as well as financial costs such as medical treatments and lost wages.
